Thanks for your interest in Henderson Middle School softball! As you know, this is a brand-new offering for Henderson. Fastpitch softball is not a county-funded sport at the middle-school level in DeKalb County. Starting up a program from scratch is a pretty big undertaking, from securing uniforms, creating a schedule, finding fields to practice on, and of course, getting enough interested players and coaches! The program will be operated as a club sport at Henderson, with support from the LHS Softball Booster Club and LHS softball coaches. The Lakeside/Henderson baseball program follows a similar model and has shown success.
Lauren Levin, Lakeside softball coach and HMS 8th-grade teacher, is currently working on finding potential opponents to play from among local private schools and other public school districts that field middle school teams. HMS parent Tex Blair has volunteered to be one of our community coaches, and Coach Levin is working to secure one or two more coaches. The length of the season is still to be determined, but 6-8 games would likely be ideal.
The current plans are to practice at Lakeside's field a couple of times per week, with practice starting at the end of the varsity and JV practice sessions. This will be a great way for new players to get introduced to the Lakeside program and players, plus give HMS players enough time to get out of school and over to the field without being rushed. We currently don't think the school will provide transportation from HMS to LHS so would need parent help to set up carpools.
We would like to set up a meeting and informal workout as a way for the players and coaches to meet each other and share more information about the program. We would like to meet on Monday August 3rd at 5:30 PM at the Lakeside softball field. Players, make sure to bring your glove, cleats, personal bats and batting helmets if you have them (Lakeside has items to use), and plenty of water. We will have a short run-through of some basic drills to assess the team, then have a quick meet-and-greet to share more details about the program. It is very important that all interested players attend – if you are unable to be there, please contact Coach Levin (email@example.com) or me (firstname.lastname@example.org) as soon as possible.
I look forward to meeting you all on August 3rd. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email or call (678-937-6486).
