Welcome players and parents to the start of the spring softball season.
The weather forecast is for quite a bit of rain this week, but I'd like to hold our first practice on Sunday Feb 9, 1-3p, at the Lakeside softball field. Our first game should be on Saturday March 1st. Up until then, I want to have 2 practices a week on the following days:
- Sunday, Feb 9, 1-3p
- Thursday, Feb 13, 4-6p
- Sunday, Feb 16, 1-3p
- Thursday, Feb 20, 4-6p
- Sunday, Feb 23, 1-3p
- Thursday, Feb 27, 4-6p
I know that the Henderson players don't get out of school until 4p and that is fine. We'll start as soon after school as possible for the LHS students and mix in the HMS students when they arrive so we can get as much work in as possible before dark. If someone from the Henderson group would volunteer to coordinate a carpool between HMS and LHS on practice days, it would be greatly appreciated.
We have a great group of players. The final count looks to be between 16 and 18, depending on a couple of decisions folks are making in the next day or two. If we do end up with 18, we're looking into an option of scheduling games for 2 LHS teams, sharing players between the games as necessary. If we don't go with 2 teams, we have a couple of strategies for dealing with the large number of players so that everyone gets even playing time. I'll keep you updated as I work through this with the league. Hopefully it will all be set by Sunday's practice and we can discuss details then.
Our current roster includes:
Come to the field with glove, cleats, and dressed appropriately for the weather. Layers are recommended. I prefer that the players wear softball pants and long socks to practice and encourage sliding shorts as well. It won't happen every practice, but there will be times when we work on sliding or other activities that will make you regret just wearing shorts. Also throw a pair of gym shoes in your equipment bag. If the weather is bad, we'll look into occasionally using the baseball building for hitting and conditioning.
Also please come to the first practice with a few goals you'd like to work on this season. If you want to work on a new position or become better at some skill, we can plan to work on it over the next couple of months.
Lastly, I plan to use email as much as possible to communicate with everyone. If you prefer that I call with information like practice cancellations or schedule changes, send me your preferred contact numbers. If you want additional addresses added to the mailing list, send those to me as well.
